It´s often a good idea to first of all do 'wild designs' so as to capture instant creativity and also avoid incorporating design mistakes in the finished one

like "Second-Life"

in a wild-design mode I see a completely different, totally visual format for it (languages-proof), a very accessible but secure software system to hold all this, where you enter as in a virtual fantasy Institute, some type of 3D animated virtual permaculture building (a living building!?) where in the 'lobby' there is perhaps a big notice-board (the News section), then there are directions to various research areas with labs in (as doors you can go through) and each investigator also has a room with their info there (the profiles) ... and we can do a kind of 'second life' (never seen it but heard about it) assistance  thing (pop in when we can and go chat to others there) and even attend conferences there (there is of course also a conference room).   Similarly to second life we can choose for our images (moving images :) to look like ourselves, our favourite plant, bug or whatever.
