Do you know there is a Teachers' Register for PC Teachers?

(can see form for it here)

(Leo): yes

If you are a PC Teacher, have you tried to join the Teachers Register?  What has been your reasoning and experience?

(Leo): I'm registered with PIL. No feedback except instructions for cumbersome money transfer. To date there is no national register for PC teachers in the Netherlands. Few people will go through the trouble of searching for a teacher abroad so I didn't see the sense in registering anywhere else yet.

Do you think there should be a Teachers' Register? Or various? How should / could they work?

(Leo): A register/directory would be very useful. I get regular requests from Transition Town Initiatives in particular for teachers near their location. Different registers should be able to "syndicate" registration information - like RSS, so you would only have to maintain one source while the information propagates to whomever needs it. Registration should be based on verifiable identification. This could be implemented using digital signatures and the CAcert assurance process. The rest would be automatic and computer-assisted. Part of the assurance procedure could be the verification of any credentials the teacher has. E.g. score points for PDC, PC Diploma, any other teaching or academic qualifications. Should be free.

What do you think could be the best way to have some kind of 'quality assurance standards' for PC Teachers?

(Leo): For lowest threshold I recommend only verification of whatever a teacher claims, like holding a PDC or PC Diploma. On a separate track there could be a process of peer-review by colleagues and popular-review by customers. Standards could be derived from nationally applicable teaching qualification standards, standards in service provision (some ISO standards may apply), standards of (scientific) quality of subjects taught. In The Netherlands the Foundation for Professional Education Quality Standards published  a set of outcome based qualification standards that could be used for our region. It applies to teachers at secondary, vocational and university education levels - covering the whole range of permaculture education.

Other comments, questions, suggestions ...

(Leo): I'm happy to explore and forge ahead with a pilot project for the Dutch speaking region, implementing what I've suggested above. Could be useful as a model for others? See: chaordischpermacultuurinstituut.nl (in Dutch - obviously ;-).
