 Grifen Hope

Where: I live in Villa El Manzano, Biobio, Chile.

Bio: A Permaculture teacher and designer from New Zealand. Born and raised in an alternative community, he has a deep-seated faith in people and their common-sense, in simple solutions that restore hope to the future. An active citizen and change-maker he is fully committed to making a difference in this life, to equip others as leaders and activists for the important work of coming decades. Trained in resource and environmental planning and landscape design, he managed the Taranaki Environment Centre from 2004 to 2007 developing a whole community approach to education for sustainability. Grifen has broad work experience in land-based industries, and has designed and implemented various intensive food production systems in New Zealand and Chile including design for ecovillage in Pirque Santiago and multiple integrated systems in the living University that is El Manzano. An experienced youth and adult educator he has facilitated many seminars, workshops and courses in the theory and practice of sustainable living including Permaculture design courses with some of the planets most experienced (Joe Polaischer, Geoff Lawton, Darren Doherty, Robina McCurdy and many more). In these increasingly dark times Grifen holds a fundamental belief that all change, even large and powerful change begins in simple conversations…in design; the way we co-create our world.

Since May 2007 he has been working in Chile with his wife Javiera Carrión and their family to create a regional centre Ecoescuela El Manzano in Biobio. In one short lifetime of two years, supported by the Gaia University family they have mobilised their community as the first official Transition Initiative in Latin America, trained 140 Chileans through the Permaculture Design Course, developed the first phase of a Chilean Diploma system, formed the chaordic organisation Instituto Chileno de Permaculture, and together with many friends and allies engaged a broad national network. Here you can connect with the work of Ecoescuela, and here see a short video clip.
