The last meeting

20 of March of 2007:

Persons who had been present in the meeting:

- Vera from German

- Cesar from Spain

- David from Portugal

We start to do a small presentation about ourselves and about the permaculture in our country.

David - said that permaculture in Portugal is embryonic and, because of that, the healthy connections are in the beginning. Have decentralized projects without connection. Exist a lot of projects, but they are independent and a lot of theme are from non-portuguese persons.

Vera - said that German Association has been founded in 1984 and is now 23 years old. And that there is an Academy which is 4 years old. This Association have a executive group with 5 persons and Vera is one of theme. The permaculture community’s in German are decentralized but connected.

Cesar - said that Spain have a new association (Academia de Permacultura - nodo Espiral Espana) and they are starting to establishing the work net.

We all agree that:

1) the gruntvig deadline (30 of March) is a very closely date and we don't have enough time to know each other, establishing and build a common vision with consensus and, after that, write a project.

Cesar suggest the hypothesis of write only a candidate letter until 30 of March, and only after that write de project with more time. However we agree that is better to know each other now, and after that think in a common project.

2) we must create a common mailing-list to facilitate de communication, change some documents, debate (dialogue) and create a common vision.

3) the next goal, in medium term, is create our European Web-Site. Like a upgrade of the mailing-list with, basically, the same objectives.

4) In the end, Vera suggest that is a good idea if each country write a text to introduce de country, the history and present of permaculture activity in the country, the persons involved and some more details and free information. Cesar and David agreed that it would be a good step to all we know each other.

Final Reflection:

Positive:

- all we were glad to know and talk with each other;

- we explore superficially some important points;

Minus Positive:

- the communication it was not so clearly because some different reasons.

Interesting:

- all the dynamic of the meeting

Portugal

Exist, at least, an annual permaculture reunion for everyone that would like to realise the “state of art” of permaculture in the country. Some groups are more active in the national communication, projects connection and information sharing like “Centro de Convergência” http://centrodeconvergencia.wordpress.com/

There are a several individual projects running but the national network doesn’t exist yet. However, exist some communication between some of this individual projects and another’s that doesn’t have web-page.

This individual projects could be divide by Portuguese regions:

In Montezinho Sierra (Bragança):

in Oct07 we created this wiki for the Iberian Network, it has list of all the projects we know about in Spain in first page:

http://reddepermaculturaiberica.pbwiki.com

Noticias page is also printed in national magazine every two months

Starting to use wiki to coordinate working groups for national concerns.

For international concerns (but with spanish speaking colleagues) we have several working groups in the spanish site for the new Chaordic Institute pages: http://institutodepermacultura.pbwiki.com (see menu for working groups)

France

Version en Français ici http://steveread.free.fr/formation.htm

2008 has seen the formation of L'Association Permaculture France and L'Université Populaire de Permaculture.

The latter has taken on the task of regulating PmC education in France, as students will be based from the Université they can then work/study at Permaculture projects who work professionally, in France it is illegal for these to have volunteers, this counts as unfair competition.

Cours d'initiation____

These can be led by anyone who has completed a PDC, they are based around the subject matter of the first chapters of the syllabus. Students who have completed these courses have a 2 day credit towards the PDC.

Permaculture Design Courses____

These are led by those who have gained their Diploma of Permaculture Design. The courses are of a minimum of 2 weeks and preferably around a middle weekend which is less intensive, relaxation, site visits, design project orientated. On presentation of a design project of sufficient quality at the end of the course students can be awarded a Certificate of permaculture design. With this they can refer to themselves as Permaculteurs apprentis, lead cours d'initiation, pass on to the Diploma system, attend the in-house parts of the French, European and International Conferences.

There is a second PDC model which is 6 two day courses, again leading to a Certificate if the required standard is met.

Eventually these courses will be free with teachers paid through the Université. Initially this will be through funding that is currently being sought but in the longer term through Dana from PmC projects and from the abundance created by the resource infrastructure that will be developed and run by the Université (similar to the Hospice de Beaumes system)

Diplôme de Permaculture.____

Using either a mentor from the Université or passing into the Compagnons de Permaculture apprenticeship scheme a student can continue towards the Diplôme. This involves 2 years minimum work and the presentation at an accreditaion event of their 'masterpiece°' and the format/syllabus they would use to lead a Permaculture Design Course.. These events have at least 2 Diploma holders present and a group of Diploma students. They are organised by the Université. The Diploma pathway/mentoring and Compagnon system are free.

Assessment____

For those who consider that they have sufficient experience and knowledge (and have completed a PDC+ a subsequent 6 months of project work) to shortcut the full Diploma scheme there is an assessment system where they can pre-present their work to at least 2 Diploma holders, should these decide that the required standard is shown said person can pass onto the next accreditation event.

Les Compagnons de Permaculture____

This involves a Tour de France/world of Permaculture sites who agree to participate with the apprenticeship system and have a Diploma holder in residence who also has at least 5 years of practical project experience. The apprentice works out a Tour which will take them to the projects most relevant to their chosen areas of specialisation. After at least 2 years thay can present their masterpiece° and the format/syllabus they would use to lead a Permaculture Design Course to a normal accreditation event.

°A masterpiece is a the work produced by an apprentice to show they have developed mastery of their chosen field, generally for the Diploma these will be a collection of apprenticepieces which are the works completed during the 2 years.
