NOTE > if you are not familiar with Bill Mollison's YearBook you can read it here: it has proposals for protocols around Academies which are very relevant here.

Were you familiar with the Year Book? What do you think of it?

(Leo): Read it. Ambitious. Very Anglo-Saxon / Greek :-) Did anyone actually implement an Academy as described in the Yearbook?

What is your understanding of what the PC Academy is and what its' main functions are, in your country currently?

(Leo): In the Netherlands there is currently no PC Academy. We do have a permaculture school that is providing most of the (non-PDC) courses. It is now under the management of the newly formed Cooperation for Permaculture in The Netherlands (CoPe). They are developing a national education programme, aiming to also provide for PDC courses and accreditation of PC teachers. Still very much in the concept phase, as I understand it.

Who can set up an Academy, why and how (where you are / your understanding of)?

(Leo): Anyone can start a private school or academy in The Netherlands. It's not a protected name. Qualifying for state subsidies though, introduces all sorts of requirements, inspections etc... To be authoritative rather then legitimate I'd guess at least the founders and or managers should have some credentials in teaching, running a school, science and preferably something to do with permaculture. Someone on staff with a PDC or PC Diploma would be nice.

How do you think PC Academies relate to PC Institutes?

(Leo): Academies focus on teaching and research while Institutes might provide broader services, such as a teacher's register, project management, promotion and marketing communication.

Your 'PMI analysis' (Plus, Minus and Interesting points) of the current Academies set up.

(Leo): Plus: great concept, great potential. Minus: visibility low, scientific standards vague. Interesting: given low threshold to start one, very accessible to just start one and see how far it goes, especially for an online academy.

What protocols (generally agreed guidelines) do you think would be useful to have around 'Academies' for PermaCulture and the PC network to thrive?

(Leo): Some I can think of: subscribing to the Earth Charter, providing PDC and PC Diploma courses according to agreed upon curriculum (through IPC or CPI process). Clear identification of teachers and their credentials (whatever they are). Open Access peer-reviewed research and curriculum development. A Journal of Permaculture would be nice.

Other comments, questions or suggestions ...

(Leo): Talk is cheap, so I will try to develop a pilot project online, so we will have something (in Dutch) to look at, try it out, evaluate and evolve. Anyone who wants to join in is most welcome :-)
